Early Days

It all started with a seven iron
and a putter.

When I was a kid, I spent my summers playing pitch and putt on the local course with my mates.  It was there, in Clara, Co. Offaly, that I learned the basics and honed my short game without even knowing it. I started playing golf proper when I was 12. My family wasn’t really into golf, so I taught myself how to play. I took every chance I had to get out on the course. I can’t say it didn’t frustrate my family and teachers a bit back then.  I think they’ve forgiven me now though.

Being there is great.
Winning is even better.

Competing against the best in the world is one thing, beating them is another.  I’ve got two tour wins under my belt and I’m still working my way up the world rankings. It’s every golfer’s dream to win a Major and I’m no different. I've proven to myself I have what it takes to beat the best in the world - I just need to keep learning from the experience of every tournament I play and continue to work hard.

The Irish Open 2009

In 2009, I was just happy to be competing in The Irish Open at County Louth Golf Club in Baltray. I had no idea that I’d find myself in a sudden-death playoff that sunday and become only the third amateur to ever win on the European Tour. Just days later, I decided to turn pro.

Portugal Masters 2012

I didn’t think a victory could ever feel this good, but winning the Portugal Masters was a really special moment for me. I became the second player to ever win on the European Tour as both an amateur and a pro. I’m not just the guy who won the Irish Open as an amateur anymore.

MEDIA

It’s a long game but I’m not on the course 24/7.

I love playing golf and relish the opportunities that come with it. I suppose I’ve always been interested in chatting with and meeting new people, so it’s no surprise that I enjoy doing interviews and sports shows.  I’m lucky to do what I love every single day so I really enjoy giving back, especially working with the likes of Special Olympics Ireland and great initiatives like the European Tours 'Putts 4 Charity'.

SPORT IS PART OF THE FAMILY

Irish sporting culture is
in my blood.

Growing up, my entire family was sport-mad. When your dad plays Gaelic Football for Offaly and wins an All Ireland Medal, Irish sport just becomes part of who you are. I still pick up my hurley and sliothar (that's a gaelic games bat and ball to our friends from overseas!) and have a knock about with my mates. No matter where I am, I try to catch our provincial and national rugby matches on TV or online.

Ireland is a place that welcomes you in without even trying.  Maybe it’s our social nature or the amazing scenery or the buzz of simply going for a pint.  Maybe it’s the craic, that indefinable feeling that embodies Irish fun. Whatever it is, and despite all the rain, I’m proud to be from one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Good Friends

My mates never let me forget
where I come from.

I play golf on the most extraordinary courses the world has to offer. I compete against the heroes of today and surround myself with past legends of the game. But best of all, I get to come home to my friends and family where I’ll always be just Shane. I don’t think I’ll ever get too big for my boots, and if I did, they’d be quick enough to bring me back down to earth.

NEW ADVENTURES

I'm a pretty simple guy at heart,
but I do like to try new things now and then.

I love the simple things in life but I also enjoy facing a new challenge every now and again - like trying surfing off the west coast of Ireland this summer. I don't think I'll ever be a pro-surfer but it was great craic. On the other hand, some things I only need to ever do once, like trying oysters. Definitely not for me! But at least I tried it, and that’s what life is all about.
